Eyeliner Series: Felt-Tip Eyeliner + Which One Ranks Supreme

Welcome to the second post in my new eyeliner series! By the end of this post you will have gained extra knowledge regarding this formulation of eyeliners and will (hopefully) have one on your list to try! Using felt-tip eyeliner is an easy way to achieve a classic winged look without the mess of liquid liners. They are easy to control, quick, and fluid when it comes to application.

*If you are new to felt-tip eyeliners, please go check out my comparison here. This will show you what the actual applicator looks like and will give you some great starter brands to try out!*

Let's begin with the felt-tip liners you already own! There aren't many great tips that I can pull out of my beauty arsenal for this formulation. Staying power with these is usually great for all day wear because it isn't as creamy as a pencil liner. However I do have a couple tips...

Tip #1: Storage
When it comes to storing this type of eyeliner, gravity is in your favor! The biggest problem people face with these is that the tip can tend to dry out pretty easily over time. To prevent this as much as possible, store them cap side down to insure that product is rushing into the tip at all times. Make sure the lid is on nice and securely though!

Tip #2: Prime
Yes, you are seeing this tip once again! Priming is really a step that can never hurt when it comes to makeup. What this will do is even out the skin and create a nice, smooth, silky base for the product to glide onto. Whether you are using a face or eye primer for this step, make sure to focus on you lash line.

After implementing the tips above, if you are still unsatisfied with the staying power or look of your felt-tip eyeliner please keep reading! I have tested the lasting power of the three liners I featured in my comparison post linked above. Which one came out on top... Let's see!

From left to right:

I first swatched the products, then let them set for a good 5 minutes.

Each was tested on how the product smudged (top 1/2) as well as how it preformed while wet (lower 1/2). I did this by rubbing the top portion with medium pressure 3-5 times and doing the same with the lower portion but adding water to my finger.

Ranking Best-Worst:
1. Eyeko (set of 3- black, brown, navy blue $25)- This swatch really impressed me. Not only did the top portion stay put, but the bottom portion held up fairly well to moisture! Out of all three, I saw less fading/running on the lower portion of this swatch. However, I have currently been having some very slight problems with this products applicator. It has gotten a little dry and has bent because the tip is so thin. This is a very common problem with felt-tip liners so please keep that in mind if you are wanting to purchase this product.
2. Physicians Formula ($6.95)- Just like the others in this test, this product's upper swatch did not budge at all when met with my dry finger- the problem came when water was added. This product held up slightly worse than the winner on the lower portion and also faded.
3. Jordana ($1.99)- This product has me sold for an everyday felt-tip eyeliner but not when I'll be coming into contact with water! This product completely vanished after water was applied and that is why it came in last. As always with felt-tips (especially with the brands I featured) staying power is not a problem if water is not involved. You can see that this formulation also has a feathering problem which is not a good thing for mature skin. Personally, this is not a huge problem for me because the feathering aspect is not noticeable on my lids but it is something to keep in mind.

How well do they remove? Lets find out!
I used one Simple Cleansing Facial Wipe and documented the process from one wipe across - three!
All three are still pretty visible. The lower 1/2 of the Physicians Formula swatch turned blue during this process. Weird!

All three are sill visible but fading.

As you can see, these liners are very smudge resistant until you add water. If you are someone who needs a little more staying power that isn't a fan water-proof makeup these could be for you! Even though they have a pretty resistant formula, they are still fairly easy to remove and that is why I love felt-tips!

So that wraps up this post all about felt-tip liners. I hope this gave you some new ideas to try or even helped you branch out to a new formulation! The world of eyeliner is such a huge place so I hope this helped to shed some light on the very broad array of formulations and staying power! Next in line is a post all dedicated to liquid liners. I will be testing out one brand new formula and comparing it to one very popular, tried and true product currently on the market. Thanks for reading!

Love, Lacey
